An 88-year-old Pembroke Pines man was hospitalized with a head injury after his bicycle collided with a van.  Saturnino Desdin was listed in critical condition at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

Pembroke Pines police and fire personnel were called to the intersection of Southwest 10th Street and Southwest 135th Terrace just after 7:00 a.m. this past Monday morning.  Desdin haad been riding his bicycle at Southwest 135th Terrace when the front bumper of a Ford passenger van travelling east on Southwest 10th Street forcefully struck the bike, causing Desdin to fall.

Gwendolyn Edwards of North Lauderdale was the driver of the van involved in the collision, and the investigation as to the cause is still underway.

This unfortunate incident followed a similar incident that occurred on Saturday, June 6.  A bicyclist was flown to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola after crashing during a morning ride.  The 55-year-old man was part of a cycling club that was touring Scenic Highway 98.  The man crashed and apparently struck his head on a curb.

Bicycling is a great recreational activity, especially in such scenic locales as Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and South Florida in general.  However, it is important to be as alert and attentive as possible when cycling because it is an activity that is often in close proximity to automobile traffic.  When riding a bike, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and that you signal any sudden moves you may make that could potentially surprise nearby drivers.
